What is powder coating?
Powder coating is a modern, long-lasting and high-quality way to finish and protect products. It avoids the need for the harmful chemicals associated with wet spraying an item and, when cured, the powder coating quickly coats the product with a resilient plastic sheet.
Items that are powder coated are sprayed with a powder containing pigment and resin particles, which blend, melt and fuse into a coating that is hard-wearing, scratch resistant and attractive. A wide range of colours, textures and finishes are available including gloss, matt, fluorescent, glitter and metallic.
Which items are suitable for powder coating?
Powder coating is a popular and effective way of finishing a wide range of products or components including office cabinets, lawn mowers, patio furniture, car and bike parts, baby buggies, fire extinguishers, signage and appliances like fridges and microwaves.
Powder coating is mostly used to coat items made of metal, because the temperatures involved in the process would cause most woods, plastics etc. to melt or burn. However, some other materials are also suitable for powder coating so if you have something in mind, please get in touch and we would be happy to advise you.
How does the process work?
The powder used in powder coating is mainly a combination of colour pigment and resin. When the correct blend of components has been mixed together, the powder is sprayed onto the surface to be powder coated. Unlike spray painting, there is no need for the use of solvents, and this makes it a far more environmentally friendly process.
When the product has been sprayed with powder it is ‘cured’ in an oven, where the high temperatures cause the powder to ‘flow’ and become a durable, hard coating around the item.
